Projects
Concept for the Development of the Passenger Information System (PIS) in Magdeburg (Germany)
Scope of Business: Traffic Telematics
Focus: Dynamic Passenger Information (DPI) Systems
Client: Mitteldeutsche Verkehrsconsult GmbH
Project Term: 2008
Project Location: Magdeburg
Project Description
The Magdeburg transport company (MVB) began in the 1980s with the introduction of an innovative Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) System. As part of ongoing expansion, Passenger Information Systems (PIS) that provide information on the actual departures at the bus/tram stops were erected at key stations. The process for data transmission (time slot method) used at the time was at its limit and was not suitable for future expansion to a comprehensive system. In addition, a nearly fully comprehensive system puts higher demands on the data supply and operability of the control centre.
The VCDB team compared various development options concerning alternative data transmission methods (including Tetra, GSM / GPRS, WiMAX) and expansion phases as well as the consequent costs on the basis of the given circumstances. A comparison of display technologies currently available on the market (LED, LCD, cholesteric LCD, TFT) was also carried out.
