Project Description

Within the context of the modernisation of the rolling stock for the Frankfurt am Main transport company (VGF), Bombardier was awarded the contract to build 100 vehicles from the FLEXITY Swift family. These new vehicles are made up of 54 units 'U5-25' each two sections and 25m long and 46 units 'U5-50' with four sections and a length of 50m. The vehicles will be delivered between 2008 and 2015.
The design for the interior is based to a large extent on the 'S-wagen' (NGT8) which has been in operation since 2003 and incorporates improvements concerning the use by people with limited mobility and in 2009 even received the 'Universal Design Consumer Favourite 09 Award' in the category 'Mobility'. A further special feature in comparison to the predecessor, the 'U4', is the integration of air-conditioning.
VCDB was commissioned for this work on the basis of their vast experience in supervising the manufacture of rail vehicles for VGF and other clients and their geographical location being not far from the Bombardier Transportation production site in Bautzen.
